Are all the osteopaths at the Carew Osteopathic Clinic registered ?.
 
All Osteopaths by law are required to have qualified with one of the government recognised institutions.These colleges now run Bachelor of Science, Degree Hons programmes.Government statute for the regulation of Osteopathy was established in 1997 by parliament.This provides the patient with the same protection as when seeing your General practitioner or Dentist. The General Osteopathic Council is the governing body for Osteopaths with the same responsibilities as the British Medical Council or British Dental Association.

What types of problems do Osteopaths treat ?.
Any mechanical problem affecting the muscles,ligaments joints and soft tissues in the body, for example;
  • headache
  • neck pain
  • whiplash injury
  • tennis elbow
  • hand pain
  • back pain
  • sciatica
  • trapped nerves
  • sports injuries
  • osteoarthritic knees
  • foot pain
 
Are the Osteopaths experienced ?
 
Mr Carew is a lecturer on the BSc Hons programme at the London school of Osteopathy. He was formally clinic tutor and clinic director at the same acredited school
Associate Osteopaths at the clinic are also involved in lecturing,CPD and research.
 
What happens during a consultation ?
 
A full medical history will be taken including detailed information regarding your current symptoms.Your general health will be discussed along with your general day to day activities
 
To fully complete our clinical examination you will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing and perform some activities including orthopaedic tests.You may undergo a neurological evaluation and you may be required to undergo further investigations such as Xray, MRI or blood and urine tests
 
Will the Osteopath give a diagnosis?.
A diagnosis will be given and an explanation of your problems will be made.
 
The osteopath will give you a guideline as to:
  1. How long you problem is expected to last before it improves, how many treatments you may require.
  2. An estimated percentage of improvement in a given time frame.
  3. A date for re-evaluation. 
  4. What kind of treatment may be used.
What type of treatment can I expect to have when I attend?
The following types of treatment may be used:
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Mobilisation of joints
  • Neuromuscular stretching and stregthening techniques
  • Manipulation
  • Interferential electrotherapy
  • Ultrasound
  • Deep tissue percussion massage
  • Cryotherapy
  • Ergonomic advice
  • postural advice
  • Medical acupuncture/ de-innervation of myofascial trigger points
  • Rehabilitation and core stability excersise programmes
Other information regarding lifestyle, posture and ergonomics at work may be needed. A personalised rehabilitation excersise programme may be recommended.
 
Will I recieve treatment on the first consultation?
In most cases treatment will be offered at this time, but in some more serious conditions treatment has to wait for some further investigations to be made
 
Can I speak to an Osteopath before I decide to have treatment?.
 
Yes, please feel free to contact the clinic and ask to speak to one of the practitioners. Our osteopaths are very busy helping patients and may not be able to speak with you immediately but will endeavour to return your call as soon as they are free.
 
Can I claim on my health insurance for my treatment?
Yes , we are covered by all major health insurance policies including BUPA, AXA PPP, HSA, Standard Life and WPA.
